WINDERMERE'S OCTOBER 19TH LUNCHEON

On October 19th, 2010 Apopka Commissioner Kathy Till was asked to speak at Windermere's Seniors Luncheon about the upcoming ballot initiatives. She provided knowledge and answered all of the questions from the audience. Thank you Commissioner Till!

Michigan St., 2nd floor conference room, Orlando. Cake cutting is at 10:30 am and we’ll “tour” you through our past, present and future. • Transportation Travel Credit – ITNOrlando, which provides door-thru-door transportation services to elders, lets you create a “credit account” that allows you to bank your volunteer hours into a credit account. Individuals - or clients of participating agencies - can use their credit account for future travel – or can receive a reimbursement check. Call 407-228-7761 for more info. • Consumer Fraud – Orange County Consumer Fraud now has posters to educate the community on the mediation, criminal and referral services provided by their office. Theft Hotline – If you’ve been a victim of a scam or identity theft, Florida has a hotline that you can call for information on how to protect yourself. It’s 1-866-9-no scam (1-866-966-7226). Other News • Life Expectancy Across the U.S.: This interactive map from The Washington Post breaks down life expectancy by geographical regions, race, and sex. American women live an average of 2.5 years longer than men. Life expectancies vary across the country and are noticeably lower in the South and Southeast (more than a decade difference in some cases). • Census 2010 – State and national aging population statistics are now available at www.aoa.gov/AoARoot/Aging_Statistics/Census_Population/census2010/docs/stterr2010.xls. • Florida Silver Alert – Silver Alert is a plan to help law enforcement officers rescue persons with Alzheimer's Disease, or a related disorder, who are driving a car and become lost. Did You Know. . . • This year, the first of the Baby Boom cohort reached age 65 and for the next 19 years, close to 10,000 people a day will celebrate their 65th birthday. • Nearly 10 million adult children over the age of 50 care for their aging parents. The percentage of adult children providing personal care and/or financial assistance to a parent has more than tripled over the past 15 years.
