A LETTER FROM YOUR MAYOR – September, 2011 My Fellow Neighbors…. As we start the last quarter of the year, I am very pleased to share with you all of the work that has taken place in the last few months. As we all know, these have been some unique and challenging times for all of us in Windermere. But we have moved forward and have achieved a lot of things that I think you will be pleased with. POLICE DEPARTMENT: Chief McCoy continues to make huge strides in making our Police Department one that we can all be proud of. Improvements are being made to our building with increased security and improved facilities. Policies and procedures are being updated and he is insuring that our officers are professionals we can be proud of. And this started with our officers being asked to reapply for their job and each of them undergoing a review including a background check. TOWN MANAGEMENT: We were most fortunate to obtain the temporary services of Mr. Howard Tipton as our interim Town Manager who has 32 years of city management experience. Mr. Tipton will be leaving us at the end of September and Mr. Robert Smith will become our new Town Manager in late October. Mr. Smith has served as the City Manager of Wildwood since 2009, is a Winter Garden resident who knows West Orange County and has a broad and proven track record in city management. I and our Council look forward to working with Mr. Smith. OTHER IMPORTANT UPDATES: MAIN STREET REPAVING: With the start of our new fiscal year October 1st, we have budgeted money for the repaving of a portion of Main Street. The worst area is the section from Fourth Avenue to the Park Avenue roundabout and we will begin the steps to move forward with repaving. As we did last year, we will try to do the paving at night to keep your inconvenience to a minimum. BUTLER BAY RECREATION CENTER: In March Windermere acquired over 9 acres of park property that was the Butler Bay Recreation Center at no cost to the town. We were also given $25,000 to help with restoring the park. After a detailed analysis and presentation to our Council by our Parks and Recreation Committee, it has been decided that the best course of action is to demolish the building. The building is infested with termites and rodents and our goal is to get this park available for our residents to use. If you want to help, please contact our Parks and Recreation Committee Liaison, Council member Richard Irwin or your Mayor. ELECTIONS: This year there will be a Presidential Primary Election. In order to save approximately $4,000 and hopefully have better voter turnout, your Council has approved moving our municipal elections to the same day as the Presidential Primary.
